Welcome to my tiny kitchen!

Whew, it’s been a heck of a year. I could create a listicle of pandemic, climate, or prior-White-House-inhabitant-related challenges here, but I trust you know what I’m referring to “all too well” (to quote a brilliant songwriter).

To combat that feeling of languish Adam Grant describes, we’ve all taken to different projects. While I never jumped on the sourdough bandwagon, I spent the past 2+ years overcoming a lifelong fear of cooking, which I can now happily say I have conquered.

My one bedroom apartment’s kitchen is now one of my favorite places… though space constraints have forced me to rely on unusual surfaces for chopping, mixing, and prepping (my trash can lid has taken on the role of makeshift table on more than one occasion). Now my next goal is to experiment with some new recipes of my own!

In 2022, I am excited to share with you - the loved ones in my virtual kitchen - a new original recipe each month, which I hope you’ll enjoy from wherever you are.

One more thing on what to expect: In lieu of a recommended wine pairing (though I always recommend you pair the meal with a wine of your choosing), I will pair each dish with a good news story of the month.

This idea is born out of a conversation I had over Zoom with my grandpa Herb, who, after a conversation about disappointing news headlines, said to me, “Okay Maya, now tell me some GOOD news!” - a yearning we can all relate to. Luckily, people all over the world are doing caring, thoughtful, and brilliant things everyday, and I hope this can be a place to highlight those silver linings over golden-brown baked goods.

Lastly, a TMI note on recipes to come: Since I - like many other proud owners of a Jewish stomach - have some food sensitivities, these recipes will be designed with low FODMAP ingredients in mind. If you’re a fellow IBS struggler (what a fun, enviable club we’re in!), these may be especially up your alley.

Enjoy the news & noshes!
